His Excellency, the Governor Andrew Pearce is standing by his decision to recommend that the airport runway be closed when it’s significantly wet.

Speaking on the breakfast show Tuesday, Governor Pearce says while he is not an expert in air safety, the decision was driven by his personal concerns regarding the safety of the runway in wet conditions. The Air Safety Regulator ASSI instructed the airports manager to close for traffic, following the most recent incident involving one of Fly Montserrat’s aircrafts at the John A Osborne airport.

He says his office is still awaiting the outcome of the investigations.

Mr. Pearce dismissed suggestions that he, in his position as Governor is protecting fly Montserrat so that the airline is allowed to operate without reprimand. The Governor says safety concerns have also been brought to his attention about Fly Montserrat’s competitor.

Governor Pearce is anticipating the resurfacing of the airport runway which is scheduled for December next year.
