Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism Convenes Forum in Montserrat
The 16th meeting of the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) Forum and workshop opened at the Montserrat Cultural Centre Monday April 16, 2018, with the Honourable Minister with responsibility for fisheries pledging the Government of Montserrat’s commitment to the sustainability of the sector going forward.
David Osborne says this will be a priority as Montserrat takes on the role of chair for both the CRFM and ministerial council.
Minister Osborne placed specific emphasis on the development of the fisheries and ocean sector in Montserrat.
Meantime, outgoing chairperson of the CRFM, Avery Gailbraith-Smikle has called for the region to be steadfast in ensuring that a sustainable fisheries sector is maintained.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, she says it is incumbent of the key stakeholders region wide to remain committed to achieving a sustainable fisheries sector for the benefit of the peoples of the Caribbean.
The Executive Director of the CRFM Secretariat Milton Haughton spoke of the importance of the fisheries sector to livelihoods and a source of food and nutrition for Caribbean states.
