Cricketer Kriston Yearwood is encouraging young aspirants on Montserrat to make their own opportunities. Yearwood was speaking to zjb news of his recent stint with Ealing Trailfinders CC for the 2024 UK Domestic Cricket Season. He says local cricketers should not let the lack of facilities stifle their progress. Local Cricketer Joshua Grant is reflecting on his call-up to the Leeward Islands Cricket Squad. Grant, who has climbed up the local league representing the island at various stages, made his debut for the Leeward Islands Hurricanes, February, in the 2024 West Indies Championship. Montserrat’s highly anticipated Reach One Teach One Building Bridges to Success Summer Basketball Camp is set to open on Monday the 17th of July with the first evening session. The camp has had to revise it’s start schedule due to a number of reasons beyond it’s control. Local Co-ordicator of the camp Mr Vachel Murrain says a decision was made to cancel Monday’s opening ceremony and the sessions for the younger campers. He says the camp will still start on the Monday, with the evening sessions for the older campers 16-24 years from 6pm to 8:30pm. The sessions will be led by UK based Coaches Jackson Gibbons and Junior Williams and will close with a prize-giving ceremony and exhibition game between an elite team made up of basketball players from the camp and a select Montserrat team. Five prominent sponsors have rallied support to ensure the success of this week-long event. The Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs & Sports, I-Mobile/Vision Center, M.S. Osborne, Shamrock Industries Ltd, and BMN Airlines have all committed to facilitating the smooth delivery of the summer basketball camp, scheduled to take place from July 17th to 21st, 2023. The Reach One Teach One – Building Bridges to Success basketball camp presents a unique opportunity for young individuals, encompassing both boys and girls aged 7 to 24, to receive professional basketball training. Seven young ladies, on Tuesday 4th May, completed an Introductory Training to Basketball and took part in a skills exhibition. During this exhibition, they were able to showcase the techniques they were taught over the last 8 weeks by visiting coach, Trevor Perkins. The training was primarily organized by the Department of Community, Youth and Sports Services, in conjunction with MABA. The ladies will continue their training with locally based coaches.

The grassroot football programme here has been suspended until further notice. That’s word from President of the Montserrat Football Association Vincent Cassell. Cassell says this decision is based on financial difficulties and the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Programme was scheduled to restart, last Monday January 4th.
