Rotary Partnership Delivers over 60 Laptops to Support Primary Education in Montserrat.

The Rotary Club of Montserrat, through a partnership with the Rotary Club of Antigua, has donated over 60 laptops to support students and teachers across Montserrat’s three primary schools. The donation has been made possible through the Rotary Club of Antigua’s longstanding Education Through Technology (ETT) Programme, which seeks to improve access to technology and strengthen opportunities for learning through the provision of digital tools. The laptops will be distributed primarily to Grade 4 students at all three primary schools on Montserrat, with devices also being provided to teachers to support classroom instruction. The initiative comes at an opportune time as a new ICT programme is scheduled to be rolled out across Montserrat’s public primary schools from September 2026. The laptops will complement the technology and equipment already available in school IT labs and classrooms, helping to broaden students’ access to digital learning and supporting teachers in integrating technology into their lessons. President of the Rotary Club of Montserrat, Ms. Michelle Cassell, said the project demonstrates the impact that can be achieved when Rotary clubs work together to respond to the needs of their communities. “This donation is a wonderful example of the strength of partnership across Rotary clubs. By working with the Rotary Club of Antigua, we are able to extend the reach and impact of a proven programme and put valuable learning tools directly into the hands of our students and teachers. Education creates opportunities, strengthens communities and gives our young people the foundation to build a better future. As Rotarians, investing in education is therefore one of the most meaningful investments we can make.” She further described the initiative as both timely and relevant, noting the increasingly important role that technology plays in education and everyday life. The project aligns with Rotary International’s Basic Education and Literacy Area of Focus, through which Rotary supports initiatives that strengthen education systems, improve access to education, support teachers and promote literacy and lifelong learning. The Rotary Club of Montserrat extends its appreciation to the Rotary Club of Antigua for facilitating the donation through its Education Through Technology Programme and for its commitment to extending the benefits of the initiative to students in Montserrat. The Club extends also extends its sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Education for welcoming the initiative and partnering with the Rotary Club of Montserrat to facilitate the successful implementation of the project. The Ministry has been instrumental in sourcing and funding the required software applications, ensuring that the laptops are equipped with age-appropriate educational tools and applications to support the Grade Four curriculum and the learning needs of the students. Through partnerships such as this, the Rotary Club of Montserrat continues to pursue service projects that create practical and lasting benefits for the people of Montserrat, with a particular emphasis on supporting children, young people and education. — END — About the Rotary Club of Montserrat The Rotary Club of Montserrat is part of Rotary International’s global network of volunteers committed to service and to creating lasting change in communities. The Club undertakes projects and partnerships aimed at responding to local needs and improving the wellbeing and development of the Montserrat community.

168 Students Benefit From Project Aid Alliouagana’s 6th Annual Back-to-School Drive

One hundred and sixty-eight students across the public schools on Montserrat are fully equipped heading into the new school year, courtesy of the Project Aid Alliouagana’s 6th Annual Back-to-School Drive. The initiative, held last Sunday, saw students from the Brades and Lookout primary schools being presented with new backpacks and school supplies. In addition, 62 students received school uniform packages. 18 students of the Montserrat Secondary School were also gifted backpacks and school supplies. Project Aid Alliougana says the support is intended to help ease the burden on families as they prepare their children for the new academic year and to ensure that children have the resources they need to start the school year with confidence and focused on their education. The charity credited the success of this year’s drive to the support of its grant-making charity partners in the United Kingdom, whose funding made the initiative possible along with Ralph Remi, King Ocean Services and the Ministry of Education. Local vendors also contributed to the event, creating an environment that allowed students to have one final day of fun before school resumes. The charity also expressed appreciation to the volunteers who worked behind the scenes to organise and deliver the initiative. Project Aid Alliouagana says the success of the 6th Annual Back-to-School Drive demonstrates what can be achieved when the community comes together to support children. Persons interested in supporting the project, volunteering or contributing to future initiatives can visit the charity’s website at www.projectaidalli.org.

Sarah F. Sweeney Foundation hosted Back-to-School Giveaway

The Sarah F. Sweeney Foundation hosted its fifth annual Back-to-School Giveaway, continuing its mission of supporting students on Montserrat with essential school supplies ahead of the new academic year. The annual initiative, organized by Washington-based educator Avril Sweeney-Crawford, was inspired by the legacy of her late grandmother, Sarah F. Sweeney, whose passion for education continues to shape the foundation’s work. Speaking with ZJB News, Sweeney-Crawford said the giveaway is rooted in her grandmother’s unwavering belief in the power of education and her desire to see every child succeed. “Well, to be honest with you, this, the Sarah F. Sweeney back to school giveaway, it’s actually something that my grandmother believed in, and that is education. And that was one of her greatest gifts that she could have given to us as her grandkids. My grandmother, Sarah F. Sweeney, a.k.a. Tata, she wanted every child to know that they are valued, and they’re capable and supported,” Ms. Sweeney Explains. This year’s event was at the Bethesda Methodist Church in Cavalla Hill. In addition to distributing school supplies, the event featured activities designed to create a fun and welcoming atmosphere for children. Planned attractions include a bouncy house, music, snacks and other treats.

Government Of Montserrat Advances Plans To Upgrade Special Education Needs Programme Despite Challenges

The Government of Montserrat is pushing ahead with plans to upgrade the Special Education Needs Programme. Minister for Education Dr. the Honourable Ingrid Buffonge said there has been progress in setting up the SEN Unit in Salem, now going through the procurement process. She also announced the recruitment of a literacy specialist. However, Dr. Buffonge says the Ministry is still facing a challenge recruiting specialists to support its programmes. “One of our challenges in education is in securing persons. We continue to work with Human Resources to improve the speed of the recruitment process, as delays in recruitment are still resulting in good professionals accepting work elsewhere for more lucrative pay. Unfortunately, we have just very recently lost our education psychologist to another island.“ She was about to accept the offer, but unfortunately had another offer and there were too many delays in Montserrat getting back to her. And we have also, in the same manner, lost our speech and language therapist who was going to say yes to Montserrat.  Dr. Buffonge says the ministry has a commitment from Human Resources to speed up the recruitment process. She thanked Psychologist Dr. Carol Tewitt, for her ongoing work with special education students, as well as First Steps Academy, a team in the US that “has been working hard pro bono for the last two years.” She also said thanks to the Ministry of Health for its work with World Pediatrics, a non-profit group which visited Montserrat recently to assess children with speech and language difficulties. According to the Minister “there is still the unfilled post for a speech and language therapist here that we’re hoping over the course of the year we’ll be able to fill. This is an essential requirement for special education on Montserrat.”
