CARICOM Reparations Movement to Remain Focused on its Objectives Despite UK Political Opposition

The Vice Chair of the CARICOM Reparations Commission says the regional reparations movement should not be deterred by statements from any political party.

Dorbrene O’Marde was responding to concerns raised about an alleged proposal by the UK Reform Party to restrict visas for persons from countries and territories involved in the reparations movement.

Winston Cabey asked a question about Montserrat’s position as a member of CARICOM and the UK Reform Party’s reported plans for the island to face restrictions if the party comes to power.

O’Marde, in his response said the reparations movement has faced opposition for decades, but argued that continued advocacy has changed the international conversation.

He said the movement should remain focused on its objectives, regardless of opposition from political groups.
