The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) recently wrapped up two days of public consultations in Montserrat on the implementation of the Caribbean Community Risk Information Tool (CCRIT) 2.0.
The consultations were held in partnership with the Disaster Management Coordination Agency (DMCA) here, and the University of the West Indies Disaster Risk Reduction Center (DRRC).
CCRIT 2.0 is a tool that will analyze the island’s mapped information to show which communities are most at risk.
Consultation meetings were held in Salem and Davy Hill on Tuesday September 22nd and Wednesday September 23rd respectively.
Speaking to ZJB News, representative from the UWI DRRC, Staci-Ann Austin discussed the feedback given over the two consultation sessions.
She said they were “rich discussions” and residents “were in agreement [with] what the maps displayed but also were able to give constructive advice into how we can improve the maps. They were very keen in commending that the maps were homegrown.”
Ms. Austin revealed that the maps were not created by the University of the West Indies, but created by “young men in the Cadet Corps here and also led by Mr. Ryan, Javon Thornhill and other folks at the Lands and Survey Departments.”
