Montserrat Tourism Authority Announces Winners of Tourism Week Photo and Video Competitions

The Montserrat Tourism Authority (MTA) has announced the winners of the Tourism Week Photo and Video Competition. In the best photo category, Ian Gerald won with his photo of a masquerader against the backdrop of the Soufriere Hills Volcano. According to the MTA, this photo powerfully blends culture, heritage, and nature, reminding us of the island’s enduring beauty and resilience. Mr. Gerald received EC$300 for his winning entry. In the best video category, Isaiah Lee won with a narrated video highlighting the importance of protecting the environment. Mr. lee’s prize is EC$500 and a return ticket to Antigua, compliments of BMN SVG Air. The MTA extends thanks to everyone who participated and helped celebrate Montserrat’s beauty through their lenses. Bethesda Methodist Church Celebrates 140th Anniversary

The Bethesda Methodist Church on Montserrat recently celebrated its 140th Anniversary as a chapel. On October 12th, a special service was held at the Church in Cavalla Hill to observe the special occasion. The service also acknowledged the over 192 years of Methodism on Montserrat. Premier and Minister of Finance and Economic Management, the Honourable Reuben T. Meade, made remarks at the service, highlighting the church’s history and its benefit to Montserrat’s community during the volcanic crisis and hurricanes. In his remarks, President of the Leeward Islands District of the Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas, Bishop Reverend Damion Hughes noted the church’s resilience, having faced several natural disasters. Chairman of the Montserrat Christian Council (MCC), Reverend Shane McFarlane also gave greetings, encouraging the church, as they look towards the future, to continue spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Montserrat’s Governor speaks about Innovative Ways to deal with Island’s Unique Challenges

His Majesty King Charles 111’s Representative on islands has been sharing about the unique challenges that Montserrat faces through her lens. Speaking during the second part of an exclusive sit-down with the governor on the Governor’s Office Facebook page, Her Excellency Harriet Cross  contends that even though Montserrat has had its fair share of misfortunes, the island is still punching above its weight. She is calling for a united effort to solving some of the challenges that confront the island and its people. Montserrat Joins Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM)

Montserrat is poised to gain significant benefits from joining the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism, CRFM. Among them, access to technical and advisory services. During the recent Caribbean Week in Agriculture in St. Kitts, Montserrat signed on to the Agreement Establishing the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM). The agreement formalizes the island’s membership in the 22-year-old institution, inaugurated in Belize City, Belize, in March 2003.   Minister responsible for Fisheries, Honourable John Patrick Osborne outlines his vision for expanding the fishing industry in Montserrat.

SPCCU Joins Global Observance of International Credit Union Day

The St Patrick’s Cooperative Credit Union (SPCCU) on Thursday October 16, 2025 joined the global observance of International Credit Union Day under the theme “Cooperation for a prosperous world.”   Manager Paul Maxwell and senior Loans officer Sherwood Taylor took to the airwaves to share what the SPCCU did as part of this year’s celebration.  Mr. Maxwell started out by explaining how the theme resonates with the SPCCU and its operations and interaction with the public. The SPCCU Manager spoke of some of the local activities to commemorate International Credit Union Day, Thursday. Meantime, Senior Loans Officer, Sherwood Taylor highlighted some products currently being offered by the credit union and some other products and services coming on stream.

Montserrat Arts Council Announces New Music Production Assistance Initiative

The Montserrat Arts Council (MAC) is pleased to announce its continued support for the island’s calypso and soca artistes through a new Music Production Assistance Initiative. Through this initiative, artistes who require assistance to record, voice, and prepare their songs for release can now access support from MAC. The Council has partnered with local producers to ensure that artistes have the professional guidance and technical resources needed to complete their musical projects. Artistes seeking assistance are encouraged to contact Mr. Joel “Bluff” Watts of Riddim Tree Studios, who will coordinate the production process and provide direction on how best to access available support. In emphasizing the Council’s commitment to nurturing local talent, MAC’s Director Kenneth P. Silcott states that this initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Montserrat’s creative industry and ensure that calypsonians and soca artistes have the tools and opportunities to deliver quality productions. He adds that MAC remains committed to investing in artistes on island, and supporting the continued growth of local music.

James “Scriber” Day Congratulated on Recent Award

A notable tour operator on Montserrat are commending James “Scriber” Daley on his recent award and his contributions to the hospitality industry on Montserrat. Daley was recently awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) medal. Speaking on the What’s on Your Mind radio programme on Tuesday, tour operator, entrepreneur, and member of the tour and taxi association, Norman Cassell congratulated the recipient, on what he described as  a deserved medal, saying that he himself has learned a lot from Daley.  He also spoke about the many ways James “Scriber” Daley has positively impacted the Montserrat community. Cassell, who is also the Chairman of the Montserrat Business Council, voiced his support for teaching the youth about nature so that they could follow in James “Scriber” Daley’s footsteps.

Premier Calls for Increased Financial Education in Montserrat’s Schools

Premier and minister for finance, the Honourable Reuben T. Meade has stated that his government is looking at several initiatives to encourage primary schools on island to join the investment climate. The Montserrat leader of government business is making a strong case for financial information to form part of the curriculum in all the primary schools on island. Speaking as a guest on ZJB Radio as part of activities marking Financial Information Month (FIM), Premier Meade said the primary aim is to help those who are already in business or intend to start one.

Government of Montserrat Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Salem Community Action Group for Salem Community Resource Centre

In a momentous occasion for the local Salem Community, the Government of Montserrat, and the Salem Community Action Group have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the handing over of the keys to the newly constructed Salem Community Resource Centre. The event took place in the presence of key stakeholders, including the Minister of Youth Affairs, his Permanent Secretary, the Director of the Department of Community, Youth and Sports Services (DCYSS) alongside representatives from the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF). The signing ceremony marked the completion of a long-awaited project that will serve as a beacon for community development and youth empowerment on the Island.   The Salem Community Resource Centre is set to become a hub for education, training, recreational activities, and social services, providing residents of Salem and surrounding areas with a space to gather, learn, and grow. Permanent Secretary, Daphne Cassell, expressed great enthusiasm over the signing of the MOU, emphasizing the building’s transformative potential for youth engagement and community cohesion. She stated that Tuesday was a defining moment in the growth and development of the Salem community. Cassell also pointed out that the new facility not only represents a physical space for young people and residents to connect and thrive, but also symbolizes the Government’s commitment to creating opportunities that promote youth empowerment, education, and well-being. The building was funded by the BNTF, as an initiative designed to support sustainable development through infrastructure projects that benefit the community. It was made possible through a collaborative effort between the Government of Montserrat, the BNTF, and local stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education and the Disaster Management Coordination Agency. BNTF representatives, including local Project Manager Mervin Browne noted that the Salem Community Resource Centre is one of the projects funded under the current round of investment, aimed at providing equitable access to key services for local communities. President of the Salem Community Action Group Barbara Bass, emphasized that the signing of the MOU, and the handing over of the keys, Represent the culmination of years of planning and collaboration, signalling the start of a new chapter for the Salem Community. As part of the MOU signing, the keys to the community centre were officially handed over to local authorities, with the promise of continued support and partnership in maintaining the centre’s operations and programmes. The Salem Community Resource Centre will be open to the public, with plans for various activities and events designed to enhance the local community’s social and economic development. The facility will also offer training programs for youth, workshops, and recreational activities, aiming to provide a safe and productive environment for all age groups.

Montserrat Arts Council Reappoints Jayesh Sadhwani as Interim Marketing Communications Coordinator

The Montserrat Arts Council (MAC) has announced the reappointment of Mr. Jayesh Sadhwani as the Interim Marketing Communications Coordinator. According to a press release by the MAC, Mr. Sadhwani will continue to serve in this pivotal role, where he will be responsible for developing and executing communication strategies that inform, engage, and inspire the public about MAC’s programmes and initiatives. The MAC says his work remains essential in strengthening the MAC’s brand presence and fostering meaningful connections with audiences both locally and abroad. The appointment takes effect immediately. Director of the MAC, Kenneth Silcott, in a statement, said they are delighted to have Jayesh rejoin the team, adding that his creativity, professionalism, and youthful enthusiasm are valuable assets to the organization. Silcott said Mr. Sadhwani’s strategic approach has been instrumental in elevating MAC’s communication efforts, and the MAC looks forward to another productive collaboration.
