The Montserrat Port Authority (MPA) and the Montserrat Customs and Revenue Service (MCRS) are refuting claims of theft and tampering involving barrels at Little Bay Port.
The claims were raised on social media, with one Facebook post alleging that barrels arriving in Montserrat had been searched, tampered with and stripped of valuable items.
The post called on Port Management and Customs to strengthen security measures, review CCTV and duty records, and investigate who handles cargo while it is at the port.
However, a joint statement from the Port Authority and Customs, on Friday said a review of cargo records and CCTV footage found no unusual activity, unauthorised access or evidence of tampering involving the shipment understood to be the subject of the concerns.
The Authority says the relevant cameras were operational and covered the areas where cargo was received, stored, examined by Customs and delivered.
Customs also made enquiries at the Transit Shed and confirmed that no formal complaint had been received by officers responsible for that area.
The Port Authority says enquiries with the relevant shipping and cargo agents also found no complaint relating to the matter.
ZJB News has seen reports confirming that an investigation was also carried out by the Royal Montserrat Police Service.
The Port Authority and Customs say they take concerns about the security and proper handling of cargo seriously.
They are encouraging anyone who believes cargo has been tampered with or that items are missing to submit a formal report promptly to the Port Authority and/or Customs, providing shipment details, dates and information on the items concerned.
The agencies say this will allow the matter to be properly investigated.
