Police Investigating HIV List Circulating on Social Media

The Royal Montserrat Police Service (RMPS) is carrying out an investigating into a list containing the names of persons who are allegedly infected with HIV/AIDS.

Commissioner of Police Steve Foster says that the list is being shared via social media.

 He says police are viewing this conduct along the lines of Criminal Libel, and if convicted persons could face imprisonment for one year.

According to the Commissioner any action having an impact on an individual or business, that are based on inaccurate and potentially malicious information could be liable to investigation and prosecution.

The RMPS is further advising individuals who are in possession of this list via social media to immediately delete it from all their devices and not to share further.

 If anyone requires assistance in doing so, they can contact the IT Department on the 491 – 2555.

 Mr. Foster says the police will seek assistance from partners overseas in terms of technical support in identifying the origin of the list.
