Government to Raise the Minimum Pension for Government Retirees.

Premier the Honourable Reuben T. Meade has announced plans to raise the minimum pension for government retirees.

Speaking on the United Alliance Let’s Talk Radio programme, the premier explained that welfare recipients receive $900 per month, adding that no pensioner should be receiving less than this amount.

He stated that the deputy Governor’s office is looking at the situation but “there’s a policy decision that has been taken in that the welfare recipients receive $900 a month for the time being, but we have some pensioners that are earning $300, $400, $500, and what we have decided is that pensioner who has worked with the government must get, should get, or ought to get less than what social welfare is getting, and neither should we want them to have to humbly go to social services and ask for a top-up. Should not happen.

Premier said the top up does not include their social security pension.

“This is just their government pension, so the minimum pension that government will be paying is $900,” explained Mr. Meade.
